Chapter 7

Alice stared up at the ceiling of the passenger cabin listening to the song that was pumping out of the stereo speakers. It was one she didn’t know, something with a lot of harmony backup vocals, a dramatic melody line, and lyrics about finding somebody to love. The lead singer’s passion was evident in the soaring notes of the chorus. What would it be like to leave such a legacy, to leave something that people hundreds of years from now would still be enjoying?

It was starting to sink in that her own legacy was very likely about to come to a very abrupt and premature end.

Yuki elbowed her. “You’ve gotta get him alone again.”

Alice’s skin prickled uncomfortably. She had a bad feeling that whatever headway she might have made with Jake earlier was gone. “I’m not sure that would help anything at this point. He seems pretty determined to go through with it.”

“Bald man looked ready to punch somethin’,” Kahale said.

Yuki leaned forward to peer at him. “I sure wouldn’t want to be on the other end of that punch. What do you think had him all fired up?”

“Butting heads with Jake would be my guess,” Alice said.

Earlier she’d watched Spider pull Andre to one side of the cockpit, away from Ty, and whisper something to his young cousin. The kid’s eyes lit up and he started to speak, but Spider quickly shushed him.

Alice flipped a glance at her crew. “Looks to me like there could be some dissent in the ranks.”

Yuki shot her a sly look. “Maybe you should try to work some magic on Spider instead.”

Alice snorted. “What magic? In case you haven’t noticed, sexy seductress isn’t really in my repertoire.”

“Well, what are we going to do?” Wendy burst out. “I’ll try with one of them if it’ll help. I’d rather that than wait and see what the bounty men are going to do with us. We’re not going to have too many more opportunities to get away. Maybe another couple of fuel stops at best, and those will go a lot quicker than this one.”

Alice, Yuki, and Kahale all turned to Wendy. She had been quiet for so long, Alice had assumed her sister had fallen asleep. For once she hadn’t been dry heaving and half-fainting on the descent. Maybe she was getting used to space travel after all.

“Little sister’s right,” Kahale said. His big, round eyes drooped.

Several silent seconds ticked by, and Wendy didn’t even protest Kahale’s use of the nickname that was usually a sure-fire way to irk her.

Alice let out a strangled sound. Being strapped down for so long was making her twitchy with the need to move, to do something. And the idea that this situation might be luxurious compared to what awaited them was making her half crazy.

“This is ridiculous,” she muttered. She twisted in her seat to holler back toward the hallway where Jake had disappeared. “Jake! Jake! I’m going to use this seat as a diaper if you don’t let me get up!”

Yuki laughed.
